Terracotta

Terracotta Rainscreen Panel Sub-framing
Preferred Partners:

Material Overview:

For centuries, kiln-fired terracotta has been one of the most beautiful and long-lasting building materials that construction has known, and has only recently emerged as a warm and timeless medium for modern rainscreen design. Terracotta comes in two standard thicknesses, 24mm and 30mm.  A variety of panel lengths and heights can be utilized to create a modern, natural aesthetic.

Design Considerations:

Knowing the type of terracotta panel and format size is essential in system selection, as the varying thickness and structure of the terracotta panels will help to define attachment system approach. Horizontal rail and semi-concealed ship-lap concealed systems are the most popular approaches for terracotta rainscreen applications.

Dartmouth Anonymous Hall - Hanover, NH

Located at the heart of 1960s medical school on Dartmouth’s north campus - The Anonymous Hall project was designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates. This design was based around an existing structure and the choice of high R-Value Terra5 terracotta rainscreen panels, a solar panel canopy, and triple-glazed windows created a building with a low embodied energy that approaches net-zero energy usage. Cladding Corp's Terra5 terracotta panels offer a large range of red tones for the design team to select the perfect match. A Vci.45 subframing system was utilized.

9 East Mount Royal Apartments - Baltimore, MD

Waldon Studio Architects provided full architectural and engineering services for the Nine East Mount Royal Apartments. A distinctive feature of the exterior design is the use of Terra5 terracotta rainscreen panels on the front facade. The terracotta material wraps the front corners of the building and extends approximately 2 feet back along the side walls, before interfacing with full-height, vertical glass corner elements. On the top floor, the terracotta extends along the side walls approximately 20 feet beyond the front plane of the building, highlighting the amenity spaces on that level. A V0.45 non-adjustable attachment system was used which included horizontal rails and clips with black anodized joint profiles and tek screws to attach components. A Cinder color tile in 18mm thickness was used and the horizontal panels were 300mm high by 1220mm long (or 1’x4’) with a smooth finish.

Station No. 5 - San Francisco, CA

San Francisco Public Works designed and managed the construction of the new replacement facility, which is expected to receive LEED Gold certification for energy and water efficiency. A terracotta rainscreen along with an HZ.22 attachment system were utilized for the new Fire Station No. 5 at 1301 Turk St. The updated design replaced the historic 1950s-era firehouse at the same location which no longer met the demands of a modern-day San Francisco. The 21,193 square-foot flagship fire station for San Francisco Fire Department’s Division 2, consists of 20 fire stations located in the downtown Financial District and northwestern neighborhoods. Alten Construction served as the primary contractor.

Story County Medical Center - Nevada, IA

Invision Architecture of Des Moines designed the expansion of the Story County Medical Center - Outpatient Unit. This impressive design portrays a sense of peace and tranquility articulated in the exterior facade design.

The building blends together wood, Terra5 terracotta panels with a Vci.45 subframing system, lighting, glass, and complementary landscaping. From the front entrance to the waiting area and patient rooms - the building's striking terracotta rainscreen cladding facade and Alpha Vci.10 exposed fasten concrete reflects a clean and professional atmosphere.  The choice of white terracotta allows the back of the building to have a simple statement, while visitors' eyes are drawn to the front entrance. The crisp white is then echoed throughout the interior, allowing the exterior to also serve as an interior design function.

Regional Medical Center - Manchester, IA

Invision Architecture designed the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, IA, which is a major 2-story addition to an existing hospital anchored by a new patient bed unit and specialty clinic.

The color and materials used for the exterior design are carried into the interior and reflect the warm neutral colors found within the neighboring rural landscape. As part of the sustainable approach to the design, renewable natural materials such as the double flat-lock zinc and clay terracotta panels were utilized which are represented in the new front entrance of the hospital. Terra5 Earth Red terracotta rainscreen cladding and an Alpha Vci.45 subframing system were creatively selected for the design to symbolize the new connection between the hospital and the community.
