Terracotta

Terracotta Rainscreen Panel Sub-framing
Preferred Partners:

Material Overview:

For centuries, kiln-fired terracotta has been one of the most beautiful and long-lasting building materials that construction has known, and has only recently emerged as a warm and timeless medium for modern rainscreen design. Terracotta comes in two standard thicknesses, 24mm and 30mm.  A variety of panel lengths and heights can be utilized to create a modern, natural aesthetic.

Design Considerations:

Knowing the type of terracotta panel and format size is essential in system selection, as the varying thickness and structure of the terracotta panels will help to define attachment system approach. Horizontal rail and semi-concealed ship-lap concealed systems are the most popular approaches for terracotta rainscreen applications.

McCormick & Company, Inc - Hunt Valley, MD

Manufacturer of flavors and spices, McCormick & Company, Inc, has a new global headquarters in Hunt Valley, MD. The building is designed to be LEED Gold certified and reflects McCormick’s commitment to sustainability bringing together 1,000 employees previously located across four different office buildings into one unified building. This four-year project by STUDIOS Architecture involved designing the base building of the 130-year-old company’s headquarters to be a modern and energy-efficient structure.

Terracotta rainscreen panels were utilized along with ECO Cladding Vci.45 subframing systems. ECO Cladding also provided subframing for the HPL panels on the facade.

Mohawk Valley Community College - Rome, NY

With the growth in enrollment as well as the new programs offered at Mohawk Valley Community College, JMZ Architects had the opportunity to design the expansion of the Community College's Rome Branch Campus. Terracotta and Swisspearl® fiber cement rainscreen panels, paired with ECO Cladding's Vci.45 cladding system, were selected for the exterior facades.

The project involved extensive renovations of the existing 65,000 square foot building to accommodate faculty offices, instructional space, a large venue for events, and academic support functions. Major additions were constructed to house the College's growing Culinary program and a new Learning Commons. The expansion and renovation have revitalized Mohawk Valley Community College's Rome Campus.

U of WA Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering - Seattle, WA

Students at the University of Washington have a new space to learn and grow their skills for the 21st century. Named in honor of Bill & Melinda Gates, this newest addition to the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering is a dynamic hub for technology education, development and innovation. The newest addition houses classrooms, technology labs and meeting rooms along with a cafe and a "flexible" event space where the school will engage with the local community hosting career fairs, "demo days" and workshops.

Designed by Seattle based LMN Architects the building features expansive windows and black metal panels interspersed with the warm qualities of Terra5 terracotta rainscreen cladding. The project was constructed by Mortenson and Axiom Construction & Consulting performed the installation of the terra cotta panels.

The building's rainscreen facade incorporates terra cotta panels from the Terra5 product line with an Alpha Hci.27 ECO Cladding subframing system.  The earthy "Pumpkin" color was chosen in matte and gloss finishes with both flat and grooved surfaces to create a multi-faceted aesthetic which provides a rich and distinct visual for the building's envelope.
